After his wife Maggie dies, Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) and his son Jonah move from Chicago to Seattle to escape the memory of his late wife.
Eighteen months on, Sam is still sad and can't sleep much.
Jonah wants his father to have a new wife, and gets Sam involved by talking about his life on a radio show. Listening to him Annie Reid (Meg Ryan) finds herself drawn to Tom and influenced by his story despite being engaged to another man.
Annie writes a letter to Sam and suggests that he meet her on top of the Empire State Building, and the events unfold in a romantic comedy.
