Ted Kramer puts his job higher than his family, making his wife Joanna fed up with her life with him and leaving home in pursuit of separation.
Ted suddenly finds himself having to take care of himself and his only son, Billy, who never cared to know what he might eat for breakfast.
Things seem very difficult and complicated at first, but Ted doesn't give up easily, gradually begins to adapt to his new situation, discovering what he didn't know about himself.
Joanna reappears for custody of the son, which causes a new battle between them.
