Writer Charlie Kaufman is commissioned to prepare a screenplay for Susan Orlein's book The Orchid Thief. Charlie has a big problem writing the film because the book does not have a clear dramatic line, and at the same time Charlie suffers from a midlife crisis. Charlie's problems increase with the arrival of his twin brother Donald, who also dreams of professional screenwriting. But when Charlie goes to meet the book's author Susan, he discovers that she has a love affair with John LaRoche, the orchid hunter and hero of her book, and discovers many unexpected things.
