The film takes place during the gloomy days of the Cold War between the United States of America and the former Soviet Union, and after the failure of a sensitive intelligence operation in Hungary, where veteran spy (George Smiley) is forced to do something like retirement to reveal the agent responsible for the failure of the operation at the request of an influential official.
