The film focuses on Wilhelmina, an American surgeon of Chinese descent. Her pregnant unmarried mother; her dancing friend, and the relationship between them and their families in their conservative traditional culture, this was the first Hollywood film focused on Chinese Americans since The Joy Luck Club (1993).
