The film stars Guy Pearce as Leonard, a former insurance crime investigator who searches for his wife's killer. During the rape of his wife, Leonard suffers a blow to the head that makes him lose the ability to remember nearby events, i.e. short memory, which does not enable him to form any new memories, and in order to enable himself to deal with this situation, he uses writing many notes, pictures and even tattoos on his body to remind himself of people, places and events. He is assisted in the investigation by Teddy and Natalie but at the same time he does not trust either of them.
